Security forces have moved inside a police station in Gurdaspur district in the Indian state of Punjab after terrorists raided it Monday, Gurdaspur’s district administrator told CNN.
Six people died in Monday’s attack, said Abhinav Trikha, the administrator.
Three of the dead were civilians and the others from the state police department, Trikha added.
The gunmen fired at a nearby bus stand before storming the police station, which is next to a hospital, said Gupreet Tur, police chief of Gurdaspur district.
Tur described the raid as a terror attack but said it was not immediately clear to which group the attackers might belong.
Trikha discounted reports the attackers were holding hostages but said some civilians were “holed up” inside a nearby residential building.
Federal Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he was confident the situation would be resolved soon.
Sandwiched between two rivers, Gurdaspur is Punjab’s northernmost district and is close to Pakistan.
