Florida senator diagnosed with prostate cancer

Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida will undergo surgery on Monday to remove prostate cancer.

A statement released by Nelson’s office said the doctor found the cancer early on in a routine check-up.

The 72-year-old Democrat said the diagnosis will not affect his future campaign plans and that he still anticipates on running for re-election in 2018.

“I’ve been blessed with good health, which has allowed me the great privilege of public service, and I look forward to continuing serving the country and Florida,” Nelson said.

The surgery will take place at a hospital in Washington. The senator showed no symptoms when they found the cancer, and additional scans showed no evidence that the cancer had spread outside of the prostate, the statement said.
