Terrorists strike at 5 North Sinai checkpoints, Egypt spokesman says

A spokesman for the Egyptian armed forces reported Wednesday that terrorists had launched simultaneous attacks on checkpoints in the Sinai Peninsula — the only part of Egypt that lies in Asia rather than Africa.

The spokesman, Mohammed Samir Abdelaziz Ghaneem, said that 22 terrorists had been killed but that clashes were continuing.

Ghaneem reported the following on his Facebook page: “70 terrorists attacked 5 checkpoints simultaneously in North Sinai.”

Military forces continue to chase the terrorists, he said.

The Sinai borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north and Israel to the east.
