BEECH CREEK — The Clearfield American Legion Post 6 Chiefs have to be hoping they saw Beech Creek ace Kenny Heverly for the last time in Thursday evening’s 7-0 Central Penn League loss.
The hard-throwing right-hander struck out 15 and was on his way to a no-hitter until Brandon Orsich singled with one out in the seventh inning.
Heverly, who walked four, registered at least two strikeouts in every inning except the fifth.
He now owns three wins and a save in four appearances against the Chiefs during the last three seasons, including a 15-strikeout one-hitter in a 1-0 victory in 2014.
Ty Bender was the lone Chief to reach second base, both times after receiving free passes. He advanced to third on Orsich’s hit and a forceout in the seventh before Heverly punctuated his gem with another strikeout.
Reese Wilson made his first start for Clearfield (3-6) and was tagged for eight hits and all of the Crickets’ runs, though only two were earned. He whiffed four and walked six in 5-1/3 innings.
Justin Fedder gave up two hits, including Bryce Hanley’s two-run single, before getting the final out in Beech Creek’s four-run sixth.
Hanley had two hits and three RBIs for the Crickets, who are the runaway leaders in the CPL at 12-0 and sport a 15-1 overall record.
Next up for Clearfield is the Bellefonte Bandits Wood Bat Tournament.
The Chiefs will play the PA Lightning at 12:30 p.m. and the Piper/Davis RBI of Maryland at 3 on the Don Womer Baseball Complex diamond in Philipsburg Friday and TBW Select of Maryland at 12:30 p.m. and the Williamsport Wildpitch at 3 on Community Field in State College Saturday.
