Canadian police officer killed while serving a warrant

A Canadian police officer was shot and killed and a second officer was injured Monday evening while serving a warrant in Edmonton, Alberta.

The shooting happened just before 8:00 p.m. MDT. Several officers with the Edmonton Police Service were in the process of executing a warrant at a residence, according to a statement from the department. Shots were fired and the residence became engulfed in flames. The statement did not say how the fire started.

“This is a tragic night for the Edmonton Police Service and our city,” said chief Rod Knecht.

Officials confirmed the death of 35-year-old Constable Daniel Woodall, who worked with the Hate Crimes Unit. 38-year-old Jason Harley, a sergeant with the Southwest Division Patrol, was treated at a hospital and released.

The suspect’s whereabouts and status are unconfirmed, although the police statement did say the suspect is male.
