TYRONE — Clearfield Area High School senior Thomas Summers was one of three pitchers selected to the 2015 All-Mountain Baseball League First Team announced at the annual spring sports banquet in the Tyrone Area High School Thursday evening.
Four Bison landed on the second unit in the voting by the head coaches, with Summers making it as an outfielder to become the only player picked at two positions.
Junior Brandon Orsich repeated as a second-team pitcher, senior Erik Sellers was tabbed as the first baseman and senior Sawyer Rowles was accorded an outfield berth.
Summers, who will continue his career at the NCAA Division I level for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, was brilliant in seven starts against league foes.
The left-hander was 6-0 with a 1.17 earned run average in 48 innings. Two of his six complete games were shutouts against league champion Central 2-0 and Bald Eagle Area 3-0, both on the road.
Summers surrendered 47 hits and 14 runs, with six unearned.
He registered 40 strikeouts, issued 19 walks and hit one batter.
At the plate, Summers was 16-for-50 for a .320 average. He had two doubles, three of the Bison’s four home runs and seven runs batted in. He scored 10 runs.
Orsich also made seven league appearances with five starts, compiling a 2-3 record and a 2.77 ERA. He worked 35-1/3 innings with 14 strikeouts and just five walks. Opponents got to him for 39 hits and 25 runs, only 14 of which were earned.
Sellers hit .345 after becoming a starter for the last 10 league games and becoming a presence in the best Bison defense in years. He was 10-for-29 with one double and eight RBIs.
Rowles, who anchored the solid Bison outfield in center, also came on strong in the second half of the league schedule to hit .333 with 11 RBIs. He bounced around the lineup before settling in as the leadoff batter and wound up 14-for-42 and with eight walks.
