VCCCLEARFIELD – Staff members at Visit Clearfield County (VCC) have announced the weekly events for May 22-28.

Ritz Theater, downtown Clearfield

Monday-Sunday

The theater’s lobby opens at 6:30 p.m. You can grab some popcorn, even if you cannot attend the movie showings. For movies and show times, please call 814-765-5835.

Prices are $6 for adults and $4 for children (12 years and under) and senior citizens (60 years and older).

The box office opens at 7:30 p.m. and the first feature starts at dusk.

Play Performance

The Odd Couple

The Clearfield Arts Studio Theatre has announced a change in their live theatre performance schedule. The play “A Hotel on Marvin Gardens” has been switched to “The Odd Couple” – female version.

The play is set in the living room of Olive’s messy apartment in New York City.  She’s invited the girls over for a rousing game of Trivial Pursuit.

Her long-time friend, queen of clean Florence, has recently separated from her husband and Olive has agreed to let her stay while things are decided or worked out.

The show will run May 22-23 with curtain at 7 p.m. each show night. The box office opens at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets can be reserved by calling the CAST office at 814-765-4474 or purchased at the CAST box office each show night.

DuBois Public Library

The annual “Works of Heart” Craft Show and raffle is being held at the DuBois Public Library. Woodworkers, quilters, photographers and other artisans are invited to participate in the fundraiser. Donations will be accepted during regular library hours through June 2. Drawings will be held at 2 p.m. June 12; proceeds will benefit the library.

DuBois Area Historical Society Fundraiser

Italian Oven

On Friday, May 22, the DuBois Area Historical Society will hold a fundraiser at the Italian Oven, DuBois. Individuals can print a voucher to present from the historical society’s Web site.

Interpretive Program, Parker Dam

Meet at 8:30 p.m. Campground Amphitheater.

Fridays are nutty this year. Watch John Acorn, the Nature Nut, in a series of video programs that are as entertaining as they are educational. This week’s episode will be waterbugs and water beetles. On Friday, May 22, there will be a walking tour of Oak Hill Cemetery hosted by the Curwensville/Pike Township Historical Society. This event is being held weather permitting and will begin at 8:45 p.m.

On Saturday and Sunday, May 23-24, there will be a celebration in honor of the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. A variety of community activities and merchant specials will be offered throughout downtown Curwensville. There will also be a 5K Run Saturday and a Poker Paddle Run on Sunday.

In honor of Memorial Day, several activities are planned in honor of the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. On Sunday, May 24, veterans who present their service card will receive a Sunday brunch discount at the Lakeview Lodge.

At 2 p.m. Monday, May 25, there will be Zumba by the pool. There will be more music and fun during a barbeque.

Also, the Lakeview Lodge pool opens Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day Weekend Programs, Parker Dam

Every Birdy Welcome! 

Meet at 10 am. – Beach House

Bring along a mug or cup for a hot beverage (coffee/tea provided), and set off on an easy walk to see what wildlife might be stirring around the park. We will focus on seeing and hearing the birds that call the park home.

Beaver Dam Trail 

Meet at 1 p.m. – Beach House

We will travel through varying habitats where we may see diverse wildlife and their sign. Part of the trail follows a historic railroad grade and you can learn about the park’s history as we go. This two-mile loop is easy terrain; please wear appropriate shoes.

Waterbug Search 

Meet at 3 p.m. – Beach House steps

Join one of the park naturalists to begin a short search for waterbugs (and beetles, nymphs, etc.). We will make a short trek across the road to the small side of the lake to shcoom the weeds for insects. There will be extra nets for you to assist in the search.

Night Sky Observing 

Meet at 7 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

Some folks gaze at the night sky, amazed by its beauty, but not always knowing what it is that they are looking at. You’ll learn about the objects visible in the night sky, as well as tools and resources to help guide your viewing and to learn more.

Saturn, Venus, and Jupiter 

Meet at 9 p.m. – Dam Breast, near the CCC Museum

Today, Saturn is in opposition. Come learn just what that means, along with taking a look at it and a few other planets and stars through the park’s night sky telescopes. Cloud cover will make viewing difficult.

On Sunday, May 24, there will not be any fishing license required to fish. Please visit the state Fish & Boat Commission’s Web site for more information.

Breakfast Buffet

Rescue Hose & Ladder Co.

From 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Sunday, May 24, there will be a breakfast buffet at the Rescue Hose & Ladder Co., Curwensville. The cost is $6.50 for adults; free for children who are under 5 years; and seniors get a 10 percent discount. Proceeds benefit the fire company.

Interpretive Programs, Parker Dam

Parachute Games 

Meet at 3 p.m. – Beach

Come help break in the park’s new parachute by playing some parachute games with an environmental twist. You will learn about the ovenbird, rodents versus insectivores, and more. All ages welcome.

Tea and Talk 

Meet at 7 p.m. – Beach House

Bring your own cup or mug (for hot beverages) and try some sweet fern/mountain mint tea grown right here in the park. Sunday evening Tea and Talk has been going on for many years–come be a part of the tradition. Parker Dam State Park is located at 28 Fairview Rd., Penfield.
