Blast reported at Shiite mosque in Saudi Arabia

An explosion rocked a mosque Friday in one of Saudi Arabia’s few Shiite population centers, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The news agency didn’t name the mosque, located in the predominantly Shiite area of Qatif near the Persian Gulf in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. But social media posts indicated it was the Imam Ali mosque, a center for Shiite Muslims, where worshipers had gathered for Friday prayers.

The posts appear to show images of several bodies amid shattered glass and concrete. CNN has not been able to speak to any witnesses to verify the accounts.

Details about the casualties weren’t immediately available.

Shiite Muslims are a minority in Saudi Arabia, where 85-90% of the citizens are Sunni Muslims.
