Burundian authorities arrested the military generals behind an attempted coup, including its leader, a government spokesman said Friday.
They will be charged with mutiny at a military court, said Willy Nyamitwe, a government spokesman. He did not say how many arrests were made.
Godefroid Niyombare, who announced the coup on radio Wednesday, was among the people detained, the spokesman said.
The announcement of the arrests came after President Pierre Nkurunziza, who was in Tanzania, said he had returned to his country. It was not immediately clear exactly where he was, but he congratulated citizens and security forces for their patriotism.
