CURWENSVILLE — The season for the Golden Tide of Curwensville has been a struggle, but the team still laces up the baseball spikes, and takes to the diamond with confidence and hope with each game.
Thursday night would be the final time the senior members of the team would step onto the home diamond wearing the gold, black and white, and wanted to finish the home part of their year on a winning note. On the opposing side, DuBois Central Catholic was ready to hopefully spoil the festivities.
Not only did the Cardinals spoil them, DCC would quintuple the hits of Curwensville, blasting 20 into the field. They would bring home nearly half of their runs in the sixth inning, as the Cardinals took the 15-0 victory.
Jake Miknis was lights out for the visiting team when he took the mound, pitching the entire shut out win. He would only give up four hits, and struck out 11.
For Curwensville, Noah Strickland would be tagged with the loss as he would only last an inning and a third, giving up six runs, all earned.
After two walks to start the game, Miknis would bring in the first run as Ryan Anderson would score on his RBI-single. Phil Myers would score in the same way when Jack Frank hit a single down the left-field line. Miknis would score on a tag-up and shortly after, Frank would score on another RBI-single by Matt Fassnacht.
The lone run of the second inning scored when Myers hit a fly ball into right-center, bringing in Anderson. The score would increase again in the third on a tag-up by Nick Szcerba and another RBI-single by Frank. Halfway into the game it was 7-0 in favor of the Cardinals.
In the fifth, an RBI-double by Myers would bring in Anderson once again, making it 8-0. In the sixth, that inning ultimately would end the game.
Thomas Grecco would start the scoring with an RBI-single to bring in Fassnacht. Two batters later, Grecco would score on a short single to right field by Myers, which then potentially put the 10-run rule into effect. The runs came easy after the next two batters, as both Anderson and Myers would score on consecutive walks. Miknis would then score in the unconventional way of stealing home. The final two runs came on an RBI-double by Szcerba, making it 15-0.
Curwensville would get on base in their first at-bat in the sixth thanks to a Jake Terry single to center. However, Jake C. Stiles would fly out to deep center field, and then both A.J. Bloom and Hunter Lancaster would strike out looking, which would then end the game.
Sitting at 3-14, the Tide close out the 2015 campaign with a make up game Saturday at Ridgway and two games on the road next week. Monday they travel to face Clearfield, and one day later their season will conclude with a trip to Brockway.
