Graham Pitches Three-Hit Complete Game in Punxsutawney Win Over Curwensville

CURWENSVILLE — After having to wait a day due to the weather not cooperating on Monday afternoon, the Curwensville Golden Tide baseball squad was back on the diamond Tuesday to make up the game originally scheduled for the day before.

Coming into town, a very tough and very difficult Punxsutawney Chucks squad that was dealing win after win on the season.

That momentum would continue as starting pitcher Peyton Graham hurled a complete game, never letting up no matter who stepped into the batter’s box.  In the end, Graham did his job on the mound, while his teammates did their job at the plate, as they would pick up the definitive 9-1 victory over Curwensville.

Graham would achieve the complete game victory by only giving up three hits and dealing an impressive 13 strikeouts.

On the opposing side, A.J. Bloom would get tagged with the loss as he pitched the first four innings, but gave up five runs, three of them earned, and five hits.  Jake C. Stiles would come in at the top of the fifth inning, but in his three innings of work would fair no better, giving up four hits and four runs.

The Chucks would get things rolling in the first two innings as Ryan Sloniger and Dakotah Byers would score the first two runs on a fielding error.  An inning later, Ryan Jones would come home on an RBI-double to center field by John Matthews to make the score 3-0.  Matthews would then come home on an RBI-single to the same location by Sloniger later in the inning.

The lone run by the Tide would come in the bottom of the third when Bloom singled into right-center to plate Garrett Shaw, but after that it was all Punxy.

Dakota Thomas would score on a tag up in the fourth, and one inning later the Chucks would score three runs, first on an RBI-single by Braxton Giavedoni that would plate Ethan Ambler and Matthews.  Another fielding error by Curwensville would bring Giavedoni home to make the score 8-1.  The final run of the ball game came in the seventh when Giavedoni scored on a sacrifice fly.

Curwensville (1-7) hopes to break the skid of loses on Wednesday as they travel to Johnsonburg.  The two previously met on April 11 in Curwensville, a game where the Tide fell 11-0 in six innings.
