BASEBALL
CLARION — Senior second baseman Derek Danver (Clearfield) stretched his hitting streak to eight games in Clarion’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division doubleheaders with Slippery Rock Friday and Saturday.
He had a double, drove in a run and scored a run in Game Two of the first twinbill at Memorial Field and had a pair of singles in the opener at Slippery Rock’s Jack Critchfield Park the next afternoon.
In 31 starts at second base or as the designated hitter for the Golden Eagles (7-24, 5-19 PSAC-West), Danver has accumulated 32 hits for a .340 average that ranks third on the team.
He is second in both hits and runs batted in (15) while scoring nine runs.
Danver has socked four doubles and two home runs.

ALTOONA — Freshman infielder Jarrett Fulmer (Clearfield) had one hit in three weekend games for Penn State Altoona at the Stewart Athletic Field.
The Lions were swept by Saint Vincent, 8-7 and 16-10, in a non-league doubleheader Sunday after splitting an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference twinbill with Hilbert (N.Y.) Saturday, winning 10-3 and losing 16-4.
Fulmer has appeared in 23 games, 18 as a starter at second base or third base, with a batting average of .241. He is 13-for-54 with two doubles and four runs batted in. He has scored seven runs.
The Lions, 11-22, are still in the AMCC playoff hunt at 4-8.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
SLIPPERY ROCK — Clarion sophomore Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships in two events during the Dave Labor Invitational at the William C. Lennox Track complex in Mihalik-Thompson Stadium Saturday.
She sprinted the 100-meter dash in 12.73 for a personal record, placing 15th, and long jumped 5.23 meters (17 feet, 2 inches) for seventh place. Both events had two dozen entries.

LEWISBURG — St. Francis (Pa.) sophomore Rebecca Johnson (Curwensville) lowered her personal record for the 3,000-meter steeplechase to 13:12.06 in the Bucknell Team Challenge at Christy Matheson-Memorial Stadium Saturday.

SOFTBALL
WINCHESTER, Va. — Freshman shortstop Megan Vanderburgh (Clearfield) closed her rookie season for Shenandoah with four hits in as many games last week.
She singled twice for her fifth multi-hit game Wednesday when the Hornets lost 3-0 to host Messiah at Grantville, Pa. In the nightcap of the non-league doubleheader, an 8-3 setback, she had another hit and walked twice.
Vanderburgh singled and scored against Emory & Henry in the Shenandoah finale at Henkel-Harris Stadium.
After losing 3-0, the Hornets came back to win 9-7 for a ninth-place 8-12 finish in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. They were 10-22 overall.
Vanderburgh started every game and led the Hornets in official at-bats, collecting 22 hits for a .237 average with two doubles and one RBI. She also drew a team-high nine walks and scored 11 runs.
In the field, Vanderburgh was first in assists with 59 and second in putouts with 58.

JOHNSTOWN — Freshman pitcher/right fielder Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield Area) had three singles but was tagged with three losses as first-year Pitt-Johnstown struggled in four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division doubleheaders last week.
She had a quality start in a 3-0 loss to California Friday at the Richland Elementary School, hurling her ninth complete game and holding the second-place Vulcans to eight hits and two earned runs.
Hoffman didn’t fare nearly as well against Slippery Rock Wednesday in a 14-1 defeat and against third-place Seton Hill Saturday in a 10-1 loss.
She has logged 71.1 innings in 14 starts and two relief stints with 34 strikeouts, 28 walks and six hit batsmen.
Hoffman has surrendered 67 earned runs for a 6.57 ERA.
The Mountain Cats are 5-25 with a 5-17 record in the PSAC-West.

CRESSON — Sophomore Heather Picard (Clearfield) pitched one inning in relief for Mount Aloysius in a 12-2, five-inning non-league loss to Juniata at the Ray and Louise Walker Athletic Complex Tuesday, April 14.
The Mounties (17-13) hold down fourth place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with a 9-5 record.
Picard (1-0) has worked 3.1 innings in two appearances, giving up three hits and five earned runs while striking out two batters, walking three and hitting one.

MEN’S GOLF
GREENVILLE — Freshman Jason Thorp (Curwensville) paced Thiel with a 77 in the Saint Vincent Invitational at the Latrobe Country Club Thursday and followed up with a 79 to help the Tomcats win their own spring invitational at The Greens of Greenville Saturday.
Thorp tied for seventh place overall in the Doug Rogers Memorial tourney as Thiel finished fifth among nine teams with a 323 total.
A season-low 309 enabled Tomcats to edge Grove City (312) and Saint Vincent (314) in their seven-team invite.
Thorp wound up 12th with his fifth consecutive sub-80 round.
