DuBois Central Catholic Pulls Come-From-Behind Victory Over Curwensville

DUBOIS — One thing about baseball no matter what level, until that final out is recorded, no game is ever over.

With little time to prepare after Monday’s loss to Johnsonburg,  thanks to the weather shuffling the schedule to start the season, the Tide would go back at it on Tuesday, traveling to take on the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals.

At the end of seven innings, Curwensville would feel the sting of “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

The Cardinals found themselves down in the final inning, with one opportunity to either send the game into extras or to walk away with the come-from-behind victory.  They would pull off the latter as the home squad would rally a three-run seventh inning, breaking the hearts of Curwensville in a 7-6 shocker.

Both squads would perform strong at the mound, but it was the strong pitching of the Cardinals’ Ryan Anderson that would help DCC get the win on the afternoon.  Pitching four solid innings, he never yielded a run, nor a hit, striking out five while only walking four.  On the opposite side, Noah Strickland would still have a solid outing, pitching three and a third innings, while only yielding two runs and striking out one.

It would take two and a half innings before either team scored a run.

DuBois Central Catholic would change that in the bottom of the third as Ty Bittner would hit an RBI-single that brought in Jake Miknis.  An inning later, Nick Szcerba would score on an RBI-single by Michael Misiewicz.

In the top of the fifth, Curwensville would answer in a big way.

The Tide would score four runs in the inning, as Strickland, Jake Terry, Jake C. Stiles and A.J. Bloom would cross home to give Curwensville their first lead of the game.  The Cardinals would not let the lead last, as Miknis scored on an RBI-double by Bittner. A single by Dan Sayers would bring in Bittner, knotting the game up at four.

Curwensville would come back in the sixth as Noah Strickland would score on a passed ball, and in the seventh it was Stiles that would be brought home with an RBI-single by Bloom.

But with half an inning to go, a two-run deficit was a small window that had just enough room for DuBois Central Catholic to steal the victory away.  The way the runs came about, however, would come off mistakes by the Tide.

Miknis would start the inning with a lead-off single.  He would advance to second, and then to third on consecutive walks by Jack Frank and Bittner.  Miknis would be tagged out on a fielder’s choice, but the Cardinals still had runners in position to tie the game.  The final three runs would follow in succession, and it all started with a fly ball.

Matt Fasssnacht would hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and Frank had enough time to beat the throw home, cutting the lead to 6-5.  The handling of the ball would be the tough part to swallow for the Tide, as a fielding error brought Bittner into home to tie the game, and Sayers would round home as well for the walk-off victory.

Curwensville (1-3) hope to break the losing streak on Wednesday as they travel to face Brookville.
