Lady Tide Sweep Sheffield As Leigey Gets Career Win Number 200

CURWENSVILLE  – It was a milestone doubleheader win for Curwensville Area High School girls softball head coach Allen Leigey and his Lady Tide on Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Tide swept the Lady Wolverines of Sheffield on a wet, damp, soggy day in Curwensville, 15-0 and 14-5.

For coach Leigey  it was wins number 199 and 200 in a career that spans 14 years, including two PIAA championships, one in 2007 and another in 2009. Leigey’s overall record now sits at 200-89 for a winning percentage of .690.

“It really isn’t about me”, Leigey said, in regards to the 200 wins. Leigey continued with,  “It is nice to reach that milestone, but my goal tonight was to beat Sheffield two times.  I told the girls I was glad they were part of this.  They’re just a lot of fun to coach and be around.”

Curwensville scored seven times in the first three innings and then blasted Sheffield with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the 15-run mercy rule in to play.

Senior Lady Tide third baseman Jordan Round had a huge first game at the plate as she knocked in six teammates with a bases loaded double in the third inning and then adding a two RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

Catcher Alaina Stiles also had a great first game for Curwensville with four hits, while pitcher Rylee Young chipped in with two base hits.

Young picked up the win, scattering two hits and striking out three.

In game two Curwensville was the visiting team, which didn’t matter at all, as the Lady Tide banged out 16 hits in a game that went the entire seven innings.

Sheffield actually had a 2-1 margin after the first inning but a five run second frame thrust the Lady Tide into the lead after two, 6-2.  It was a lead the Tide would not surrender.

The Lady Tide would then go on to add two in the third inning, one in the fourth and seventh, and a big four spot in the sixth that led to the victory.  A victory that was number 200 for Leigey.

Stiles had another huge game for Curwensville with three hits and two RBI’s.  Two of the hits were a double and a triple.

Curwensville sophomore second baseman Kayley Harnet smacked out four hits and drove in two teammates.

Nikki Harker, playing first base, had three hits, which included a double, while left fielder Megan McCartney added two singles.

Tide winning pitcher Young, (3-0), added a triple.

After the long day, Leigey said, “I think we are growing with every game we play. We are showing signs of getting better each time we take the field.  We just want to show improvement and play well each time out because down the road we will need to bring our “A” game against some really good teams.”

The Lady Tide, now 3-0 on the young season, are home Friday afternoon when they host the Lady Wolves of Kane. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 pm. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Kane, but was switched to Curwensville due to poor field conditions for the Lady Wolves.  The Lady Tide will now travel to Kane on May 5.
