Militants armed with grenades and rifles stormed a police station Friday at a border district in Indian administered Kashmir, killing two people and wounding five others.
A senior police officer said the militants attacked the police station early morning.
“A sentry and a civilian were killed in the initial attack while five other cops were injured,” said Danish Rana, police chief of Jammu area.
“The injured who included two paramilitary troopers were evacuated to hospital.”
He said 15 police officers have been evacuated from the building, which has been surrounded by the Indian army and paramilitary troops.
“There are still some people inside the building and we will storm it after they are evacuated,” Rana said.
Indian army soldiers and police officers are at the scene. The area has been barricaded, and traffic is prohibited from passing through.
The attack in Kathua district bordering Pakistan comes days after a new Peoples Democratic Party-BJP coalition government took office in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The area has seen several similar attacks in the past.
Separatist violence has rocked Kashmir since 1989, leaving more than 42,000 people dead, officials say. Rights groups have cited higher casualties, with some giving double that number.
