Bison’s Myers Named to All-Mountain League First Team; Spaid, Hazel Are Honorable Mention

TYRONE — First-team selection Will Myers, a sophomore guard, was one of three Clearfield Area High School underclassmen named to the 2014-15 All-Mountain Boys Basketball League Team announced at the annual winter sports banquet in the Tyrone Area High School Monday night.

Junior Cody Spaid and sophomore Tommy Hazel received honorable mention in voting by the coaches.

The 6-3 Myers topped the Bison in scoring with 362 points, a 16.5 average, and tallied 20 or more six times.

He netted 49 three-pointers and was in double figures in all 20 games, including a career-high 31 points against Tyrone Dec. 19 when Clearfield handed champion Tyrone one of its two ML losses, 79-61.

Myers, who received honorable mention last season, also was the Bison’s No. 2 rebounder with 161, a 7.3 average.

Spaid, a 6-7 center, came close to a double-double average with 228 points and a team-high 224 rebounds. His averages were 9.5 and 9.3, respectively.

Spaid, who stepped outside for 11 treys, scored in double figures 13 times with a personal-best of 20 points in a 64-36 victory over Curwensville Feb. 9.

Hazel, a 6-2 forward, was the No. 2 pointmaker for the Bison with 339, a 15.4 average, and pulled in 115 rebounds (4.8).

He reached double figures in 16 games and topped 20 five times, including 29 in Clearfield’s 77-72 win over Bald Eagle Area for the Purchase Line Lions Club Holiday Tournament title Dec. 30.

Clearfield finished one game behind Tyrone at 11-3 and was 20-4 overall.

Most Valuable Player honors went to Huntingdon senior Nate Gearhart, who was named to the first team the previous two seasons.

Myers is joined on the first team by senior Nathan Soellner and junior Anthony Politza of Tyrone, senior Brandon Gettig of Bald Eagle Area and junior Zach Engle of Penns Valley.

Gettig was on the second team while Politza and Engle were honorable mention last year.

The second unit is comprised of Penns Valley’s Logan Pearce and Logan Johnson, Bald Eagle Area’s Jason Jones, Huntingdon’s Kobren Frederick and Central’s Alex Lafferty. All are seniors except Pearce, a junior.

Others making the honorable mention list were Bald Eagle Area junior Trey Butterworth, Bellefonte senior Trent Fortney, Tyrone senior Blake Brooks and Central senior Brenden Vollkhommer.

The 2014-15 standings:

Tyrone 12-2, Clearfield 11-3, Penns Valley 10-3, Huntingdon 8-6, Bald Eagle Area 6-8, Central 5-8, Bellefonte 3-11, Philipsburg-Osceola 0-14.
