HERSHEY — The PIAA AAA State Wrestling Championships concluded Saturday night at the Giant Center in Hershey with Franklin Regional, on the strength of four state champions, running away with the team title.
They easily outdistanced runner-up Bethlehem Catholic, which had two state champions,152-106. Two Northwest Region teams placed in the top-10: Mifflin County seventh place with 46.5 points and Altoona in ninth with 42 points.
The outstanding wrestler award was won by 132-pound champion A.C. Headlee (45-1) of Waynesburg Central. Headlee defeated two-time state champion Luke Pletcher (39-2) of Greater Latrobe 7-2 in overtime to win his first PIAA gold medal.
The Northwest Region won twelve medals overall, the fewest of the five participating regions. The highest finisher were the two silver medalists from Altoona – Cole Manley (33-4) at 106 and DJ Hollingshead (38-3) at 170.
District 9’s lone medalist was Punxsutawney junior Kaleb Young’s (19-2) fourth place finish at 152.
District 7, which forms the South West Region, and is more commonly known as the WPIAL, was by far the best region, earning the most medals (35), and having the highest highest winning percentage (.628).
