HERSHEY — After two disappointing visits to the Giant Center as a Class AAA qualifier for DuBois, Curwensville Area High School junior Shae Bloom will be claiming a PIAA Class AA medal Saturday afternoon.
The 138-pound District 9 champion and Northwest Region runner-up secured that goal with a win in the third round of wrestlebacks after losing to undefeated Southwest champion Mike Carr of South Fayette in the quarterfinals Friday morning.
Bloom took down Chestnut Ridge senior Derrick Claar (32-11) in the first and third periods to end the Southwest Region fifth placer’s season, 5-1.
Earlier, Carr (42-0) advanced to the semifinals for the second year in a row by beating Bloom 4-1 with takedowns in the first and second periods.
Where Bloom stands on the podium as Curwensville’s first medal winner since 2012 will be determined in Friday night action and Saturday’s consolation finals that will be contested at the same time as the championships.
He will go against Northeast Region fourth placer Nate Jones (37-6) of South Williamsport in the consy quarterfinals that start at six o’clock.
A win keeps him in contention for the bronze medal, pending a later bout, while a loss would drop him into the match for seventh place.
