90 dead in Afghanistan avalanche

Heavy snowstorms caused an avalanche in northeastern Afghanistan, killing dozens of people.

The avalanche happened Tuesday in Panjshir province. By Wednesday afternoon, 90 people were confirmed dead and 15 others were injured, said Abdul Rahman Kabiri, the province’s governor.

About 100 homes have been destroyed, Kabiri said. He added that if the central government and nongovernmental organizations didn’t send emergency assistance quickly, more people would lose their lives.
