85 dead in Afghanistan avalanche

Heavy snowstorms caused an avalanche in northeastern Afghanistan, killing dozens of people.

The avalanche happened Tuesday in Panjshir Province. By Wednesday afternoon, 85 people were confirmed dead, said Baba Jan, the head of disaster response at the Afghan Red Crescent Society.

About 100 homes have been destroyed, said the province’s governor, Abdul Rahman Kabiri. He added that if the central government and nongovernmental organizations didn’t send emergency assistance quickly, others would lose their lives.
