Brockway Wrestlers Win at Curwensville, 44-27

CURWENSVILLE – The regular season ended for high school wrestling teams Curwensville and Brockway Thursday night on the Golden Tide’s home mat in Curwensville.

And it was the Rovers beating the Golden Tide 44-27 before a good sized crowd at Patton Hall on a night when all Tide wrestlers and their parents were honored before the varsity match. It would also be the last time the Golden Tide seniors would wrestle on its home mat.

First year Tide head coach Dean Swatsworth said after the match, “We got wins tonight where we thought we would, but we didn’t break through in other matches that I thought we might. The kids wrestled hard again, we just didn’t get the results that we expected. And of course we had those flip-flop matches that could go either way that have killed us all season.”

Kaleb Witherite, Tide sophomore at 170, picked up a forfeit to start the match and improved his individual record to 18-12 on the season.

The Rovers would win the next three bouts, at 182, 195 and 220 with a decision, a technical fall and a forfeit to move into the lead, 14-6.

At 285, Seth Connors stopped the mini-run by Brockway with a 6-0 decision over Hunter Richardson. Connors, a senior (5-11) picked up his six points in the middle period with an escape, a takedown and a three-point near fall.

Freshman Anthony Winebold, at 106 pounds, picked up the second forfeit of the night for Curwensville that gave the Tide its last lead at 15-14. For Winebold it was victory number 10 against 14 losses.

Brockway countered by winning the next four bouts with its second technical fall of the night that came at the 113 weight class.

A major decision at 120, followed by a pin at 126 and a forfeit at 132 gave the Rovers a very comfortable 35-15 lead with just four bouts remaining.

Many in the crowd thought, and hoped for, a feature match at 138 between two outstanding junior wrestlers in Mason Lindenmuth (22-2) of Brockway and Shae Bloom (24-2) of the Golden Tide.

The Rovers could have moved Lindenmuth up to meet Bloom at 138 but chose to have him take the forfeit win at 132 instead.

Meanwhile, Bloom made quick work of Brockway’s Wyatt Caruso with a first period fall in just 1:07 to pick up victory number 25 on the 2014-15 campaign.

With Brockway ahead 35-21 the Rovers sealed the team victory with a surprise win at 145 when Dustin Jamison eked out a 4-3 decision over the Tide’s Sam Bressler. The first period ended 2-1 in favor of Bressler and it stayed that way going into the third two minutes.

Jamison used an escape and a takedown in the final period to pull out the one point decision. The Brockway junior improved to 17-12 on the year while Bressler’s season mark is now 20-8.

In the final bout of the evening, at 160, junior Hunter Lancaster of Curwensville pinned Brandon Little of the Rovers in 1:55. The fall came with Little leading 5-4. The win improved Lancaster’s record to 11-14.

Curwensville ends the 2014-15 dual meet season with a record of 4-12.

Swatsworth finished by talking about what needs to be done for next year’s team, “We just have an awful lot of work to do in the off-season. There is so much we need to work on, and improve on, to be successful.”

In the junior high match, Brockway also won, defeating the Golden Tide in a close one 43-42. The Curwensville junior high team ended its season 9-7.

Both teams now await the District 9 AA Wrestling Tournament that is scheduled for the weekend of February 20 and 21 at Clarion University
