Golden Tide Wrestlers Knock Off Glendale 45-30

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Area High school wrestling team got back on the winning track Thursday night with a home dual meet win over the visiting Glendale Vikings. The Golden Tide topped the Vikings at Patton Hall by a score of 45-30.

With the victory the Tide are now 3-3 on the year while the Vikings are at 5-8.

After losing to Clarion on Tuesday, 43-18, Curwensville head coach Dean Swatsworth had some concerns coming into the match against Glendale, saying, “I wasn’t real sure how we would wrestle tonight after getting beat by Clarion the other night. But as a whole I thought our team wrestled well. It was the team I see in practice every day.”

The match started at 145 with senior Sam Bressler giving the Golden Tide the early lead, one they would not surrender, defeating Bradon Hughes of the Vikings, 13-6. Bressler is now 12-3 on the year.

Eli Jacobs, a Tide sophomore, gave his squad a huge shot of energy with a pin over Glendale’s Matt Yeckly at 152 in 3:21. It was the first win of the year for Jacobs (1-2).

With the Tide out in front 9-0, Hunter Lancaster received a forfeit at 160 pounds which was quickly followed by a pin for Kaleb Witherite in just 39 seconds over Viking Garrett Stephenson at 170.

The Tide were in command at 21-0 before the Vikings made it close, for a while anyway.

Glendale would get pins at 182 and 195 which was followed by a forfeit at 220 putting the Vikings to within three points at 21-18.

Tide heavyweight Seth Connors took the momentum away from the Glendale squad with a 13-3 major decision over Kody Hess giving his team a 25-18 edge.

Curwensville would then receive back to back forfeits. Anthony Winebold at 106 and Seth Woolcock at 113 gave the Tide a 37-18 bulge with the two uncontested wins.

Jeremy Gardner kept the Tide rolling at 120 with a hard fought victory, 9-5, over Glendale’s Nick Miacco.

Glendale would get its final points with a fall at 126 and a forfeit at 132.

The featured bout of the evening was at 132 were Golden Tide undefeated wrestler Shae Bloom improved to 13-0 with a 15-0 technical fall over Jonathan Rojas of the Vikings. Bloom used three near falls to secure the victory in the evening’s final bout.

Swatsworth closed briefly by saying, “From Tuesday to tonight I felt we did things better .”

In the junior high match Curwensville stopped Glendale by a score of 57-24.

It will be a busy weekend for Curwensville as they compete in the Clearfield Duals on Saturday. Wrestling starts at 8:30 am. The Golden Tide will first wrestle Port Allegheny followed by a match with General McLane.
