Campus Corner: Wriglesworth Helps Backstroke Relay Team Win; Barger Logs 4-1 Record at Bud Whitehill National Duals

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Sophomore Krystal Wriglesworth (Clearfield) swam the middle leg for the victorious California University of Pennsylvania 300-yard backstroke team at the South Florida Relays Sunday.

Freshman Vanessa Breunig, Wriglesworth and senior Rachel Trocchio turned in a 3:10.65 time to win by nearly a full second against six foursomes from four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams.

Wriglesworth also swam the freestyle leg for the Vulcan’s ‘A’ 400 medley relay foursome that finished sixth in 4:27.12.

SHIPPENSBURG — Freshman Kara Thorp (Clearfield) anchored the Edinboro ‘B’ 200-yard freestyle foursome that earned second-place points in a 111-89 loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Shippensburg Friday evening.

Her 26.29-second split, a personal best, was the fastest for that Fighting Scot quartet.

Edinboro is 0-2 against PSAC opponents and 2-3 for the season.

WRESTLING

WILLIAMSPORT — Sophomore 165-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield) won four of five matches to mirror Lycoming’s third-place record in the 27th annual Bud Whitehill National Duals at Lamade Gym Friday and Saturday.

Barger defeated Logan Hermsen 8-5 in a 19-13 win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point, pinned Nick Tommas in 47 seconds in a 39-5 rout of Case Western Reserve and bested Michael Palomba 5-2 in an 18-17 criteria win over No. 28-ranked Coast Guard on the first day as the Warriors advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2008.

Undefeated Williams doubled up Lycoming 24-12 with a berth in the finals at stake, Barger losing 10-3 to Timothy Garripoli.

In the third-place match, Barger edged Chris Nuss 4-2 to help the Warriors (11-3) turn back Thiel 22-18.

No. 7-ranked Messiah outclassed Williams 34-6 for the championship.

Barger is 10-4 in dual meets and 17-6 overall.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

UNIVERSITY PARK — St. Francis University sophomore Rebecca Johnson (Grampian/Curwensville Area H.S.) ran a personal-best 5:55.62 on the Ashenfelter II Indoor Track to place 21st in the mile run at the Penn State Relays Saturday.

She had debuted with a 6:27.34 at that distance in the 2014 Penn State Relays.
