Militants storm bank in Afghanistan’s Helmand province, official says

A group of armed insurgents has stormed the Kabul Bank in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province, a spokesman for the provincial governor said Wednesday.

Afghan security forces are at the scene and engaged in a gun battle with insurgents in the bank, said spokesman Omar Zwak.

He did not confirm local media reports of at least two explosions there.

There is no word yet on casualties or the number of gunmen in the bank, Zwak said. The operation is ongoing.

It’s not yet clear who is behind the attack.

The continuing violence comes as Afghan security forces prepare to take on greater responsibility for ensuring the country’s security as international forces transition to a supporting role.
