BROCKWAY — The Curwensville Area High School boys basketball team erased Brockway’s four-point halftime advantage in the third quarter and maintained a slender lead most of the fourth period to edge the Rovers 53-51 in their Allegheny Mountain League South Division opener Monday night.
Jake Terry fronted a three-pronged attack with 17 points, including a pair of clutch three-pointers that gave the Golden Tide two-possession leads in the final minutes.
Trey Rauckhorst and Harrison Bloom chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively, as the Golden Tide balanced its record at 1-1.
“We played a lot better than we did Friday,” coach Shane Pentz said. “We didn’t make shots and we were in foul trouble the whole game up at Moshannon Valley. Trey played about 10 minutes.”
Free throw shooting was the difference with Curwensville shooting 60 percent at the foul line to outscore the hosts 15-3.
Trailing 52-48, the Rovers held the ball for about a half minute before Jake Wineberg heaved up a long desperation shot that made it close with five seconds on the clock, according to Pentz.
Rauckhorst was fouled and hit the second of two foul shots with two ticks left to set the final score, but not before a Rover missed a turnaround shot at the buzzer following a full-court pass.
Weinberg and Jared Rogos had 12 points apiece for Brockway (0-3).
The Golden Tide will try to even their Moshannon Valley League record Wednesday when they welcome Harmony to Patton Hall.
