Shaw Library to Close for Carpet Replacement

CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library has announced that it will close Dec. 8 for replacement of the carpeting and will re-open Dec. 15. Library materials may be returned to the book drop.

Police Warn Residents about Fraud

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough police have received several calls regarding to attempted fraud.

According to police, the attempted fraud occurs when the victim receives a phone call from an unknown person who is posing as a family member – a granddaughter or grandson. The caller states that they have been arrested and placed in jail.

During Awareness Week, PennDOT Highlights Mature Driver Resources

HARRISBURG – With the number of older drivers on the rise in Pennsylvania, PennDOT has marked Older Driver Safety Awareness Week, Dec. 1-5, by highlighting the importance of roadway safety and older driver mobility.

“Losing the independence of mobility can be particularly devastating for a driver with years behind the wheel,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch. “It’s essential for older drivers and their family members to speak openly about driving safely or how to handle changes in driving ability.”

Commissioners: Revised Camp Hope Run Landfill Plans Under DEP Review

CLEARFIELD – PA Waste LLC has submitted revised plans for its proposed Camp Hope Run landfill in Boggs Township to the state Department of Environmental Protection, announced the Clearfield County Commissioners at Tuesday’s work session.

LT Supers Interviewing Roadmaster Applicants

CLEARFIELD – The Lawrence Township Supervisors are in the process of interviewing applicants for the position of roadmaster, according to Barb Shaffner, township secretary.

A decision will be made at the Dec. 16 meeting to fill the roadmaster position that is to begin Jan. 1.

DAHS Science Team Finishes Second at St. Francis

LORETTO – The DuBois Area High School Science Team participated in the 21st annual Science Day competition at St. Francis University on Nov. 25.

The DAHS team of Kayla Brennan, Eli Kirk, Payton McAnnich, Noah Orner and Braden Royer finished second overall at the 32-school event, losing to Northern Bedford by five points, 145-140.

Burfield Waives Hearing in Terroristic Threats Case

CLEARFIELD – A man accused of threatening people inside a Houtzdale residence waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday during Centralized Court at the Clearfield County Jail.

Brian Elliott Burfield, 47, of Houtzdale has been charged with four counts each of simple assault, terroristic threats and recklessly endangering another person.

House Passes The Achieving a Better Life Experience Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson voted to support “The Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act” (H.R. 647/S.313), which passed the House with bipartisan support by a vote of 404-17.

Commissioners Request EPA to Reconsider Disposal Injection Well Permit Decision

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners have submitted a letter requesting that the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reconsider its decision to approve a permit to Windfall Oil & Gas Inc. for the construction of a disposal injection well in Brady Township.

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield school board approved maintaining Mary Anne Jackson as its president and Larry Putt as its vice president for 2015 during Wednesday night’s re-organizational meeting.

House Votes to Block Obama on Immigration

(CNN) — The Republican-controlled House on Thursday passed a bill that would undo the President’s executive order on immigration. The vote, almost entirely along party lines, was 219 -197. The measure is going nowhere in the Democratic-led Senate, and the White House has threatened to veto it. But GOP leaders hope the vote lets opponents of the President’s action vent their anger and avoids a fight that could risk a government shutdown.

DuBois Schools Placed on College Board’s AP® District Honor Roll

DUBOIS — The DuBois Area School District is one of 547 school districts in the United States and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the fifth annual AP® District Honor Roll for increasing access to AP course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams.

Thompson Votes to Oppose Pay and Benefit Cuts to Active Duty Servicemembers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-5) has voted to oppose H.R. 5759, the Fiscal Year 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The legislation passed the House by a vote of 300-119.

Clearfield Students Participate in Science Day

LORETTO – The 21st annual Science Day was held Nov. 25 at St. Francis University. More than 500 high school students and 48 high school teachers from 30 area high schools engaged in learning opportunities focused on several branches of science.

Senior students enrolled in Sarah Fye’s advanced chemistry class at the Clearfield Area Junior-Senior High School had the opportunity to compete in teams in a single elimination science bowl competition or attend three different presentations across campus.

Girard Twp. Fire Causes $100K Worth of Damage to Camp

GIRARD TOWNSHIP – A fire caused approximately $100,000 worth of damage to a Girard Township camp at 2:55 a.m. Thursday, reported the state police at Clearfield.

The camp was located at 736 Joseph Dr. It was occupied by Martin E. Sowers Jr. of Williamstown, state police said. Sowers traveled to another camp nearby to report the camp fire to Clearfield 9-1-1.

Clearfield Police: DuBois Man, Vincent Aaron, Arrested on Drug Charges

CLEARFIELD –A 25-year-old DuBois man, Vincent Aaron, was arrested on drug charges after he was allegedly found in possession of LSD and marijuana during a traffic stop on Thursday, reported the Clearfield Borough police.

‘Just a Blast’: Orion’s First Test Flight Under Way
