HYDE — The Clearfield boys and girls cross country teams easily upped their records to 3-1 in dual action with the girls winning 18-45 over BEA and the boys receiving a 15-50 victory because BEA didn’t have enough boys to field a team.
Everyone ran the 5,000 meter course together with Clearfield freshman Alex Coval crossing the tape first overall in a time of 19:03. The first girl to cross was classmate Paige Mikesell in 20:39.
Clearfield head coach John Jacob was glad to finally race at home, despite the lack of compettion on the boys side that BEA provided, “It was nice to be on our home course in front of a home crowd to help cheer us on. Alex Coval was the top finisher for the boy’s team today. It wasn’t his fastest time of the season but he was able to control the pace of the race from the start. Josiah McClarren was next across the line and he battled Bald Eagle’s top runner the whole race. At one point Josiah had make back all of the lead that (Austin) Klinger had established over the first mile and had overtaken him going into the last half mile but he was not able to hold off a late kick by Klinger. After Josiah, it was a string of Clearfield runners before Bald Eagle was able to get their second runner across the line. Freshmen Harry McMillen and Quinten Edwards once again broke the 20 minute barrier and established personal best times. Both freshmen are responding well to their training. For the girls, Paige and Claire Mikesell finished 1 and 2 respectively. Both girls were able to finish ahead of Bald Eagle’s top runner, Maddie Cingle. They earned top points in the race for Mountain League MVP honors. Kristi Fox was gaining on the top Bald Eagle runner over the last mile but fell a few seconds short of overtaking her. Nikol Chew was next across the line and did it in a personal best time of 23:22. She is going to be one of the key places for Mountain League and District Championships if she continues to improve her times. All of the girls have seen where we need them to be when it comes time for our two championship meets. They are starting to make a push to see if they can come away with some upsets.”
The Bison will next be in action on Tuesday September 30 when they host Central and Philipsburg-Osceola.
