INSTITUTE, W.Va. — Junior running back Beau Swales (Clearfield) rushed for 78 yards on 22 carries in his first start for Lock Haven Saturday, but the Bald Eagles were denied a win in their opener when West Virginia State scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to pull out a 19-14 victory at Lankin Field.
Swales also caught two passes for eight yards and returned two kickoffs for 29 yards as he went over the 1,000-yard mark for all-purpose yards in his career.
After the game was delayed nearly 2½ hours because of lightning around Dickerson Stadium in the third quarter, the Bald Eagles struck for both of their TDs to grab a 14-13 lead that they were unable to protect.
Swales appeared in 22 games as a freshman and sophomore, rushing 78 times for 185 yards and two TDs and grabbing 12 aerials for 113 yards and one score. He was the kickoff return specialist last fall, returning 25 for 594 yards for career totals of 27 returns for 628 yards.

LORETTO — Long snapper Eric White (Clearfield) made one solo tackle for the Clarion punt unit in a 27-13 loss to host St. Francis University in front of 1,715 fans at DeGol Field Saturday afternoon.
The 6-2, 200-pounder is spinning the ball back to Golden Eagle punters and placement holders for the third season.
He was involved in nine stops in his first 22 games.

INDIANA — Grad student wide receiver Trey Campman (Clearfield) saw action for Indiana University of Pennsylvania Saturday as the Crimson Hawks rolled past Saint Augustine’s (N.D.) 41-19 at Frank Cignetti Field.
A crowd of 4,059 was on hand in George P. Miller Stadium to see the Crimson Hawks uphold their No. 20 ranking in the American Football Coaches Association NCAA Division II Poll.
Campman played in four games last season with one reception for 14 yards.

MILLERSVILLE — After having his redshirt freshman season cut short by a knee injury in his first start for Millersville, quarterback Curtis Frye (Clearfield) entered the season as the backup to Matt Misley, a graduate student who transferred from Wagner, where he played in 21 games and made five starts last fall, including one at Syracuse.
Wagner competes in the NCAA Division Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
Frye, who was injured in his sixth appearance for the Marauders, was the most effective of the four quarterbacks who directed their offense, completing 34 of 54 passes for 323 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions. His 63.0 completion percentage and 111.91 efficiency rating topped that quartet.
Frye did not play Thursday night when visiting Livingstone (N.C.) College rallied for two touchdowns in the final 1:26 to spoil Millersville’s lidlifter, 46-44, at Chryst field in Biemesderfer Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock Defensive back Derek Morgan (Clearfield) will miss his redshirt junior season after suffering an injury during the preseason.
Morgan started seven of the 23 games he played in The Rock secondary the last two campaigns.
He was involved in 74 stops, including 43 solo tackles, and had four interceptions he returned with 91 return yards. He also broke up five passes.

WILLIAMSPORT — Senior kicker Zach Fannin (Clearfield) and freshman tight end Wyatt Flanagan (Clearfield) are members of the Lycoming team that opened with a 42-13 non-conference rout of visiting Susquehanna at David Person Field Saturday afternoon.
Fannin played in four games last season, averaging 52.7 yards on 16 kickoffs and making his lone field goal try, a 27-yarder.

HUNTINGDON — Freshman offensive lineman Jon Janocko (Clearfield) is the No. 2 left guard for Juniata but did not see action for the Eagles in their season-opening 21-13 win at Grove City Saturday afternoon.

BEAVER FALLS — Freshman Austin Jacobson (Curwensville) is a defensive back for the Geneva Golden Tornadoes, whose comeback fell short in a 24-19 non-conference loss at Frostburg (Md.) State Saturday night.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
CLARION — Two former Clearfield Area High School players were on the Memorial Stadium turf Thursday evening and Clarion freshman Carlee Freeburg forward was credited with one shot as the Golden Eagles scored in the 89th minute to defeat Bloomsburg for the first time in 10 meetings, 1-0.
Brooke Mohney, a senior, started at forward for the Huskies, who outshot their hosts 20-9 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener for both teams. She had one of the Huskies’ nine shots on goal.
Freeburg also saw action in Clarion’s 2-1 overtime loss at Lock Haven Saturday evening.
Mohney followed up with one of Bloomsburg’s seven shots goal in a 1-0 loss to Indiana University of Pennsylvania in its home opener at Steph Pettit Stadium Saturday evening.

MADISON, N.J. — Freshmen McKenna Aleksivich (Clearfield) and Katie Powers (Clearfield) subbed in both wins by Penn State Behrend in the Drew Tournament Saturday and Sunday.
Coming off a 2-1 loss to Houghton (N.Y.) last Wednesday, the Lions shut out Drew 3-0 and Elms (Mass.) College 7-0 to improve to 4-1.
Aleksivich, a midfielder, has played in all five games while Powers, a defender, has appeared in three.
