Beech Creek’s Heverly Near-Perfect in Blanking Chiefs 1-0

BEECH CREEK — The Clearfield American Legion baseball team’s three-game winning streak came to an abrupt halt Monday because of an overwhelming pitching performance by Beech Creek’s Ken Heverly.

The Chiefs almost were victims of a perfect game in the 1-0 loss that dropped them under .500 again at 4-5 in the Central Penn League.

Clearfield’s only baserunner was Cole Kephart, who spoiled Heverly’s gem with a one-out single in the fifth inning, and he was thrown out on a steal attempt.

Heverly whiffed all 10 Chiefs the first time through the lineup and finished with 15 strikeouts.

The Crickets got their lone run off Thomas Summers in the first inning. Trapper Kunes doubled, advanced to third on Cole Hanley’s single and stole home when the Chiefs caught Hanley in a rundown.

Summers surrendered eight hits and five walks in his first loss in three decisions.

Clearfield will play Philipsburg Tuesday at the Bison Sports Complex. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
