DUBOIS — Thomas Summers pitched four hitless innings after Zach Timchak broke up a tie game with a fourth-inning single as the Clearfield American Legion Post 6 baseball team edged DuBois 4-3 at Showers Field Saturday evening.
Timchak chased home Sawyer Rowles for the only earned run in the Central Penn League opener, and Summers turned that into the game-winning hit with his relief stint.
The left-hander, who had four strikeouts, had to work for the win as he walked five batters and hit one but was able to bear down with the tying run in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Summers had a key pickoff in the fourth when he issued two free passes and induced a game-ending pop-up with runners at the corners in the seventh.
Brandon Orsich started for the Chiefs and allowed only two hits and one walk, but was charged with two unearned runs because of three errors in the first frame and a third tainted tally due to another miscue in the third inning.
Clearfield had grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with the help of a walk to Logan Puit and a one-out DuBois error. Cole Kephart singled in the first run and Josh Kennedy doubled across the other two.
With Noah Schneider working in relief of Jake Miknis for DuBois, Rowles led off the fourth inning by drawing a walk and stealing second base to set the stage for Timchak’s clutch hit.
The Chiefs will play their home opener against Beech Creek Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Bison Sports Complex. They will visit Clarence Thursday.
