Curwensville Softball Drops Two At Brockway

BROCKWAY – The 2014 softball season has been a challenging one for the Curwensville Area High School squad, and Monday continued to cause frustration for head coach Allen Leigey.  The Lady Tide scrambled to set the line-up for a double-header with Brockway and dropped both games by scores of 8-2 and 7-3.

The first game was a continuation of a game that started nearly a month ago in Curwensville.  After three pitches on April 14, rain halted action and was rescheduled for Monday’s second meeting.  However, playing both games on the road was the least of the Black and Gold’s troubles.  Since that first meeting, catcher Haley McGarry suffered a broken finger, and the back-up catcher, Alaina Stiles, was ill for Monday’s game.

As a result of the missing backstops, the Tide was on its heels and found no consistency to challenge the Lady Rovers.  Curwensville was unable to gain an advantage in either game as Brockway led both games from the first inning.

“We hit the ball well, especially in the first game,” said Leigey.  “We didn’t run the bases very well, and they realized early that we were inexperienced behind the plate and took advantage of that.”

Curwensville (8-9) slapped out 11 hits in game one, but stranded eight runners through the contest.  Tierra Shope and Nikki Harker collected three hits each for the Lady Tide while Kealy Wassil added two.  The only runs the team could manage, however, in the continued game was in the bottom of seventh inning when Megan McCartney doubled home Abby Dugo and Shope.  Curwensville was technically the home team in that game.

The Lady Rovers collected 10 hits in the first game, but found half of those in the fifth inning to break open an existing 2-0 lead.  Juli Esposito’s triple was the big blow in the frame.

The woes for the visitors continued in game two as Curwensville again out-hit Brockway (8-to-6), but were unable to capitalize on their efforts.  The Lady Rovers scored two runs in the first inning after two outs and held off the Tide the rest of the way for the two-game win.

The closest the Lady Tide could get in the contest was 2-1 in the second inning.  Riley Young led off the inning with a single and stole second.  Young moved to third on a ground out to first before a sacrifice fly by Melanie Milliron gave Curwensville a spark.

However, the scoring drought continued, and Curwensville could manage just two runs in the seventh the rest of the way.  Brockway was able to add one run in the third and two runs in both the fourth and fifth to distance themselves from the visitors.

Dugo and McCartney added two hits each for Curwensville in game two while Brooke Clarkson was the only Rover with a pair of hits in the win.

The Lady Tide is scheduled to end its regular season on Wednesday when they travel to Clarion-Limestone for another double-header.
