ST. MARYS – The Curwensville Area High School baseball team ran into a buzz-saw on Wednesday as Elk County Catholic earned a 10-0 win in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.
The Crusaders sent their ace Brandon Schlimm to the mound to stymie the Golden Tide. Schlimm pitched five innings of scoreless baseball allowing two hits while striking out 14 and walking no one.
“In all my years of watching high school baseball, Schlimm’s outing today was as phenomenal an effort as I have seen,” said Tide coach Denny Johns. “He was nearly untouchable.”
The only chink in Schlimm’s armor was the bat of catcher Tyler Mays. Mays singled twice off Schlimm for Curwensville’s only hits. The Tide managed just three base-runners in the game as Ricky Magnuson reached on an error.
Curwensville pitching allowed 14 hits in the game while walking four and striking out four. The big blow for ECC came in the bottom of the fifth with two outs and the bases loaded. Danny Singer cleared the bases with a double. Moments later Singer came home on a run scoring single by Jeff Wehler to end the game.
The Golden Tide (5-7) will get little time to regroup as they travel to DuBois Thursday afternoon to battle DuBois Central Catholic. The Cardinals captured the two teams first meeting by a 5-1 count less than two weeks ago.
