DuBois Central Catholic Shuts Down Golden Tide, 5-0

CURWENSVILLE – Left hander Phil Myers and Jake Mikinis combined for a two hit shutout on Monday afternoon for a 5-0 DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) victory over Curwensville on the Golden Tide’s home field.

Myers struck out eight Curwensville batters and didn’t issue a walk.  The lefty retired the first nine hitters before Curwensville shortstop, Tanner Elensky, doubled to lead off the fourth inning for the Golden Tide.

Elensky, who had the Tide’s only other hit, a sixth inning single off of Mikinis, was cut down trying to stretch his double into a triple.

Tide head coach Denny Johns commented on the Cardinals ace, “Every time I see the Myers (Phil) kid he just seems to get better and better.  And today was no exception.”

The Cardinals scored their first tally in the third inning and then broke the game open with a four run fourth frame thanks to two run doubles each from Mikinis and Dom Goldbach.

Curwensville mounted a seventh inning rally of sorts but still could not push a run across home plate.

Jake B. Stiles and Brett Gardner both reached base on errors, and when Kyle Johns drew a base on balls Curwensville had the bases loaded with no outs.

Mikinis was up to the task however, retiring the next three hitters and preserving the Cardinal shutout.

DuBois Central Catholic got additional offensive help as first baseman Matt Fassnacht checked in with a pair of singles on the day.

A light rain fell throughout the majority of the contest as the Cardinals, with the win, reached the .500 mark for the year at 3-3.

Curwensville saw its two game winning streak end and now stand at 3-6 on the 2014 campaign.

DCC stranded 12 runners, all in the first five innings.

A bright sport for the Tide was the two innings of relief work by junior pitcher Travis Lansberry.

Lansberry allowed no hits and no runs while striking out three Cardinals, something Johns was happy to see, “I thought Travis was our one positive note on the day.  I really liked what I saw of him on the mound those last two innings.”

About the status of his squad, Johns said, “We just need to re-group and come back with good efforts on Thursday and Friday and hopefully we can get close to playing five hundred ball before next week rolls around.”

The Golden Tide journey to Kane to play the Wolves on Thursday afternoon at 4:15 pm and then travel to Flinton on Friday to battle Glendale in a 4:30 pm start.
