Campus Corner: Picard Earns Third Win

SOFTBALL

PITTSBURGH — Freshman Heather Picard (Clearfield) logged her third win in five decisions as Mount Aloysius (7-5) beat host Chatham (0-3) 4-3 in the first game of Thursday’s non-conference twinbill sweep at Varsity Field.

The right-hander took a four-hit shutout into the sixth inning but ran into trouble with two walks and a hit batsman around a single and a fielder‘s choice. She departed with a 4-2 lead and one out, and Bridget Yothers came on to save the victory.

Picard struck out five, walked three and hit two in her sixth start.

She has pitched 29 innings with 27 strikeouts, 12 walks, three hit batsmen and a 3.86 earned run average.

BASEBALL

GREENSBURG — Freshman right-hander Kurtis Krise (Woodland/Clearfield Area H.S.) pitched his first complete game for Penn State Altoona (5-12) but wound up on the short end of a 4-3 outcome against host St. Vincent (6-9) at Bearcat Ballfield Thursday.

Krise struck out five and surrendered seven hits in six innings. All of the Bearcat runs were earned.

The start was the second for Krise, who has worked 12.2 innings in four appearances with a 6.39 earned run average. He has fanned nine batters, walked two and hit one.

JOHNSTOWN — Junior second baseman Derek Danver (Clearfield) singled in both of Clarion’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division losses to Pitt-Johnstown (8-13) at Point Stadium Friday.

He also scored a run in the opener, a 4-2 setback.

Clarion (3-11, 1-5 PSAC-West) was shut out 1-0 in the nightcap.

Danver is third on the team in hits (10) and batting average (.238) and still is tied for the lead in runs batted in (4).
