Greensburg – Clearfield 8th grader Luke McGonigal competed at 140 pounds in the first-ever Pennsylvania Junior High State Championships over the weekend at the Hempfield High School Field House in Greensburg and came away with a third place finish.
McGonigal went 6-1 in his 26-man bracket, with his only loss coming to eventual state champion Robert Patrick of Ligonier Valley in the quarterfinal round. McGonigal’s tournament ended with a 9-7 win in the consolation finals over Luigi Yates of Erie McDowell.
Curwensville’s Kaleb Witherite also placed, earning a 7th place medal at 167 pounds.
