DUBOIS – The DuBois Area Middle School reading and math lab recently won a contest sponsored by Edmentum, a leading provider of online learning programs.

In November, Edmentum held a contest for outstanding classrooms that demonstrate the use of their software. The purpose was to promote visual displays of the success of the software and especially the students. Edmentum is designed to drive student achievement for academic and career success.
Taking on the challenge, seventh- and eighth-grade students from the school submitted a video to YouTube of their computer lab for the contest. This video showcased a classroom decorated with palm trees, bar graphs, routines, the afterschool program and many bulletin boards displaying the students’ achievements.

In December, the winners were announced.  Robin McCoy, DuBois Area Middle School AmeriCorps member, and her computer lab students were presented with first place in the middle school category.   Along with a congratulatory document and $100 gift card, the district was awarded with a $500 certificate that can be used toward any Edmentum program, such as Study Island or Plato.  The $100 gift card will be used for a pizza party for those students who participated in the video.

McCoy works with more than 200 students each week on the computer-based program Study Island. Her goal is to help students achieve a better score on their PSSA tests, help students with their homework and assignments, as well as gain confidence in an academic setting.
