AMESVILLE — Senior guard Brett Gardner poured in 26 points and the visiting Curwensville Area High School basketball team carried the middle two quarters by a 29-10 margin to defeat Moshannon Valley 61-44 in Moshannon Valley League action Wednesday night.
With Gardner netting nine points, the Golden Tide came out of the first period with a 14-11 lead.
After increasing the spread to 24-16 at intermission, Curwensville wrapped up its third consecutive MVL win with the first 17 points of the second half.
Trey Rauckhorst worked inside for eight of his 10 points and Gardner chipped in with seven more in the one-sided third quarter that ended with the Golden Tide in front 43-21.
“We were able to turn them over with our half-court press, which created some easy baskets,” Curwensville coach Shane Pentz said.
Tanner Elensky contributed a dozen points to the Golden Tide‘s sixth victory in eight games.
David Bubb canned all eight free throws for a 14-point effort that topped the Black Knights, who fell to 1-6 after their MVL opener.
In the prelim, Jake Terry scored 12 points as the Golden Tide junior varsity triumphed 28-21.
Curwensville, No. 2 behind Redbank Valley in Class AA in the initial Laurel Eye Clinic D9Sports.com District 9 Basketball Rankings released Sunday, is off until journeying to St. Marys Tuesday for an Allegheny Mountain League South Division test against Elk County Catholic.
