Campus Corner: Keller Goes 2-2 at Southern Scuffle

CHATANOOGA, Tenn. — Pitt sophomore 141-pounder Jake Keller (Curwensville) won two bouts and lost to a pair of seeded wrestlers in the 2014 Southern Scuffle hosted by the University of Tennessee of Chattanooga in McKenzie Arena Wednesday and Thursday.

He gave two-time All-American and No. 4 seed Mike Nevinger of Cornell a battle, losing 5-4. Nevinger, a senior, was a two-time New York state champion.

In the consolation bracket of the 46-wrestler weight class, Keller sidelined Northern Colorado soph Nick Adams 11-8 and Cornell freshman Eli Bienstock 5-2 before being pinned in 4:12 by No. 9 seed Anthony Collica of Oklahoma State. Collica won three state titles as an Ohio schoolboy.

Keller’s record is 7-7.

WILKES-BARRE — A decision by freshman 157-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield) triggered a strong finish that gave Lycoming a 29-9 victory over Rochester Institute of Technology at the Pennsylvania/New York Duals in Scandlon Gymnasium on the King’s College campus Saturday.

After Barger defeated Won Kim 5-1 for a 10-6 lead, the Warriors won four of the final five bouts to even their record at 4-4.

In their first meet, Barger bumped to 165 and was edged 6-5 by Dave Hall in a 23-12 win over SUNY-Oswego.

Barger, who was 1-2 in the Johnson and Wales University Wildcat Open at Providence, R.I., on Dec. 20, sports a 13-9 record with a 3-4 log in dual meets.
