HARRISBURG – Wrapped packages and expensive gifts around the tree can be enticements for burglars during and after the holidays. That’s why the Pennsylvania Insurance Department is reminding you to take precautions and update your homeowner’s policy.
Here are some dos and don’ts:
- Do tear down boxes and dispose of them on trash day so those outside do not know what new items have been brought into the house.
- Do let neighbors know when you won’t be home so they may be aware if there are uninvited visitors in your home.
- Don’t keep your gifts in plain view of windows and doors.
- Don’t mention on social media the dates and times you are going to holiday parties or winter excursions.
If a theft happens, it is not likely the burglar will return the goods, and only about a quarter of stolen property is recovered.
If properly insured, however, homeowners can be compensated for a loss. Be certain your coverage is up to date, retain receipts, and contact your insurance company immediately to report a theft.
