Clearfield Cross Country Teams Swept by Penns Valley in Season Finales

Clearfield — The Clearfield Area High School Cross Country teams ended their dual meet seasons on Tuesday when they were each swept by the visiting Penns Valley Rams.

The boys lost 32-23 to drop to 5-4 and the girls lost 39-22 to finish their season at 6-3.

For the Lady Bison, Claire Mikesell was the first to cross the tape in 20:26, while Bison Alec Freeman was second in the boy’s race in 17:51.

With the post-season looming, Bison Head Coach John Jacob noted that both squads were ready, despite the losses, “The girls fell one win short of repeating as the Mountain League Champions. Despite the loss, we were able to come away from this race with some good individual performances. Claire Mikesell was able to take down another one of her Mountain League competitors with a victory over Alyssa Limbaugh. With a win at the Mountain League Championship Invitational, Claire can win her first Mountain League MVP. Her times over the past two meets have also put her in a nice position to return to the state championships in November.

“Kristi Fox was next across the line for us. Kristi was able to come away with her best time of the season and is also looking for a return trip to the state championships. Hunter Gathagan also turned in her best race of the season coming from outside of the top 10 to almost finishing in the top five. Hunter has been racing well all season and has really started to drop her times.

“For the boys, Alec Freeman was the top finisher for us. Alec and Penns Valley’s Nick Fuller had a terrific race battling all the way to the finish. Nick had a nice finishing kick over the last ½ mile to pull out the win. As the season progresses I think Alec will begin to hit his stride and his times will begin to drop.

“Next was Jacob Ryan, who has slowly begun to work his way up in our line-up. Jake ran a nice race to finish second on the team with his fastest time of the year. We are looking forward to see how high Jacob can place at the Ridgway Invitational in preparation for the District  9 Championships.”

The Clearfield teams will participate in the Ridgway Invitational on Saturday October 5 in preparation for the Mountain League Championships and District 9 CHampionships later this month.
