HOLDEN TAKES SB MOD SPECIAL AT AMP
CLEARFIELD – With lightning flashing all around the speedway and the rumble of thunder sometimes louder than the cars and even a brief drizzle here and there; that didn’t deter the cars and fans from pulling into America’s Motorsports Park for the return of the 358/Small Block Modifieds.
Jimmy Holden of Tiona won the SBM feature while repeat winners included: Luke Hoffner of Turbotville in the Randy Sterling Trucking Late Models, Jake Shady of Beech Creek in the Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub Semi Lates, Curtis Teats of Morrisdale in the Harter and Sons Garage Street Stocks, Hunter McCracken of Curwensville in the Quigley’s Pub Pure Stocks and Josh Frantz of DuBois in the Clearfield County Metals Four Cylinders.
Dan Gill and Dwayne Taneyhill brought the Late Models to the green flag with Gill taking the lead and setting the pace early on, but a multi-car tangle sent several drivers to the rear of the field. The lead was still being held by Gill. As he was working his way towards the seventh lap, Luke Hoffner found a groove he liked and took the lead in turns three and four. Gill fell back to second, then he fell back to third as Doug Eck moved into second and set his sights on Hoffner. Unfortunately Eck hit a barrel, which cost him two spots on the next caution. This put Gill back in second, but he was unable to get past Hoffner, who went on to get his seventh win of the season. Gill, Eck, Bill Davis and Justin Kanouff completed the top five with heat wins going to Denny Fenton and Billy Eash.
Kyle Fink took the lead at the start of the Small Block Modified feature, with Kyle Holden in second and John Stole in third. Fink was setting the pace as Jimmy Holden moved into second on lap three. The duo battled for the lead several laps, often side-by-side, with Jimmy Holden able to take the lead from Fink on the final lap to get the victory in the return of the Modifieds at the speedway. Jimmy Holden cut his teeth at the speedway and began his racing career here at the tender age of 16. Fink was a close second with Stole, Kyle Holden and Bob Garvey completing the top five. Jimmy Holden also copped the heat.
Neil Wilson and Dylan Fenton brought the Semi Lates to the green flag, with Fenton leading the opening lap before fifth place starter John Eckenrod took the lead and was setting a fast pace. On lap five, Jake Shady moved into second and one lap later he was able to move under Eckenrod for the lead. Two laps later Randy Sterling moved into second and set his sights on Shady, but Shady was not to be denied his second straight win of the season. Denny Fenton got by Sterling on the last lap for second, with Sterling, Eckenrod and Dylan Fenton completing the top five. The heat was won by Denny Fenton.
Brian Rhed and Dan Smeal led the Street Stocks to the start, with Rhed taking the lead and holding it for the first lap. Fifth place starter Curtis Teats took the lead on lap two and dropped Rhed to second. Smeal and Rhed swapped second several times throughout the feature, with Tim Fannin getting into the act and making it a three car tussle for second, as Teats was still holding off the field. As Allen Luzier waved the double checkered flags, it was Teats getting his fourth win of the season. Smeal held on for second with Fannin grabbing third, Rhed was fourth and Bob Roseman was fifth. Jamie Price and Smeal split heat wins.
Justin Queen and Cragan Brady led the Pure Stocks to the green flag, with Queen taking the lead and setting the pace. Hunter McCracken was on his bumper much of the race and through the cautions. As Queen led, the battle for a point title in the field was raging on between Cody Hummel and Ben Krause, as they ran with each other the entire race. On the final restart, with just four laps to go, McCracken got the jump on Queen and took the lead going into the first turn, as Queen could not run down the leader. At the line it was McCracken, Queen, Lester Hudson, Jim Challingsworth and Krause. Heat wins went to Krause and Hummel.
Mike Lucas and Ron Brady led the Four Cylinders to the green flag, but it was third place starter Josh Frantz who led the opening lap, with Lucas in second and Brady third. While Frantz led, it was anyone’s race for second, as Lucas, Brady, Stephanie Ivory and Pat Brehm all fought for the right to be second, but when the checkered flag fell it was Frantz with the win over Ivory, Brady, Lucas and Bryan Warren. Heat wins went to Frantz and Brady.
PIT NOTES: 72 cars filled the pits, including: 15 Late Models, 7 Modifieds, 7 Semi Lates, 14 Street Stocks, 13 Pure Stocks and 16 Four Cylinders…this week the points end with a regular show for the Late Models, Semi Lates, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and Four Cylinders, plus the 600 Micro Sprints.
