DAUGHERTY, FIELDING, JOINER AND STILLMAN NEW AMP WINNERS
CLEARFIELD – America’s Motorsports Park turned things Pink on Saturday night to help the fight against breast cancer and to show support for co-owner America Taylor, who is a 13-year survivor of the disease.
The event saw 104 cars pack the pits, many sporting pink one way or another, and of the six divisions in action, four drivers found the winners circle for the first time, including Skip Daugherty of Fairmount City in the Laurel Highlands Sprints; Pat Fielding in the Harter and Sons Garage Street Stocks, Colton Joiner of DuBois in the Quigley’s Pub Pure Stocks and Charles Stillman of Shirleysburg in the Clearfield County Metals Four Cylinders. Repeat winner included: Luke Hoffner of Turbotville in the Randy Sterling Trucking Late Models and Denny Fenton of Clearfield in the Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub Semi Lates.
The Laurel Highland Sprints hit the track with Ed Mesaros and “Cowboy” Jim Kennedy on the front row, with Mesaros taking the lead and Don Sotosky quickly moving into second and Kennedy falling to fourth. Skip Daugherty moved into the second spot on lap two and he followed Mesaros until lap five. On that restart Daugherty took the lead and set sail, leaving second place up in the air, as Mesaros, Kennedy, Brian Riddle and Nicole Walker were all challenging for the spot, but when Alan Luzier waved the double checkered flags, it was Daugherty taking the win with Kennedy, Walker, Mesaros and Riddle rounding out the top five. Heat wins went to Riddle and Daugherty.
Garrett Krummert and Dwayne Taneyhill led a full field of Late Models to the green flag, as Krummert took the lead and held Tom Decker Jr. at bay for the first 11 laps, as the top eight were presenting some close racing, something broke on the #29, sending Krummert to the pits for the night as a caution hit the surface. This gave Decker the top spot, and he was setting the pace for just two laps, when he became the next victim, falling by the wayside and out of action. Luke Hoffner then inherited the lead and he had Taneyhill in hot pursuit. The top five were still racing under the proverbial blanket, but when the checkered flags waved it was Hoffner getting his sixth win of the season, over Taneyhill, Andrew Gordon, Mike Altobelli and Dan Gill. Heat wins went Taneyhill, Altobelli and Decker Jr.
The Semi Lates were led to the wire with Chad Hooven and Dylan Fenton scheduled for the front row, as Hooven chose to tag the rear, putting Chad Desmett on the pole. At the start Desmett took the lead until lap three when John Eckenrod took the top spot with an outside pass in turns three and four, but he lost the lead on lap seven with an inside pass of Eckenrod, again in turns three and four. Once he had the lead, Fenton never relinquished it, as Eckenrod had to hold off Jake Shady and Randy Sterling for the runner up spot. At the line the top five were: Fenton, Eckenrod, Sterling, Jason Mullen and Dylan Fenton. Heat wins went to Eckenrod and Sterling.
Raymond Reynolds had the Street Stock pole with Tim Fannin outside the front row, with Reynolds leading the first lap, then on lap two Pat Fielding moved past Reynolds into the top spot, as Fannin sat third with Johnny Lindenpitz and Curtis Teats completing the top five. As the race went on, Lindenpitz moved into second as Fannin and Teats were waging a battle for third and Dan Smeal was coming into the picture. As the double checkers fell it was Fielding winning over Lindenpitz, Teats, Smeal and Bob Rosman. Lindenpitz, Teats and Smeal all copped heat wins.
The Pure Stocks saw Joe Stajnrajh and Eric Lucas on the front row, as Lucas took the lead with Colton Joiner in second. As they battled for the lead Jimmy DeArmitt and Mike Duck were battling for the third position. The lead changed on lap four, as Joiner took the lead and brought DeArmitt along to second. Duck was third with Hunter McCracken and Cody Hummel waging their own battle. As the feature was winding down, it was Joiner getting his first win of the season at AMP with Duck, DeArmitt, McCracken and Justin Queen from 16th in fifth. Heat wins were taken by McCracken, Duck and Joiner.
Jim Kleitches and Charles Stillman brought the full field of Four Cylinders to the start, as Stillman took the lead and opened up a huge lead as the real race was for second, with Eric Luzier, Kleitches, Eric Lucas and Stephanie Ivory battled for second, then Josh Frantz and Eric Boozle got into the act. When the checkered flag waved it was all Stillman, with Frantz, Ivory, Boozle and Lucas completing the top five. Frantz, Luzier and Boozle won the heats while Pat Brehm won the B-main.
AMP Notes: There were a total of 104 cars in the pits, including 11 Sprints, 21 Late Models, 9 Semi Lates, 19 Street Stocks, 19 Pure Stocks and 25 4 Cylinders…”Cowboy” Jim Kennedy turned 79 on Aug. 7 and after his second place finish, he stopped to yodel for the fans on the frontstretch…Coming up this week is a regular show for the Late Models, Semi Lates, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and Four Cylinders, plus the 270 Roadshow Micro Sprints.
