As the peak season for summer yard sales approaches, PennDOT reminds would-be shoppers that some items may only seem like a good deal. Car seats, motorcycle helmets and bicycle helmets are three highway safety-related items that should not be purchased at rummage sales.

Purchasers cannot be sure of the history of these products, such as whether it was involved in an accident. Most car seats are only to be used six years from the date on the seat, and helmets vary depending upon their manufacturer.

PennDOT has also reminded drivers to be sure their vehicle is clear of the road surface when parking to visit a sale. Pedestrians should also use caution if they cross a roadway.
