HYDE — First-inning misplays helped put the Clearfield Chiefs in holes they couldn’t climb out of as once-beaten DuBois maintained its grip on first place in the Central Penn American Legion League by sweeping a doubleheader, 8-3 and 7-2, at the Bison Sports Complex Saturday.
The visitors led 3-0 after their first at-bat in the opener and 4-0 after one inning in the nightcap.
Only two of those runs were earned.
DuBois (9-1) locked up Game One with four more runs off Thomas Summers in the second inning.
Justin Sleigh and Derek Heckathorne paced the winners with run-scoring singles in both of their early rallies.
Devon Walker and Darren McKee also contributed two singles apiece to the 11-hit attack, and Adam Bankovich added two RBIs.
Left-hander Josh Hayes gave up eight hits and six walks but struck out 14 in going the distance.
Clearfield (3-13-1, 1-11 CPL) got on the board in the third inning, cashing two of their free passes on bases-loaded singles by Ronny Ogden and Kyler Kephart.
Ogden singled again in the fifth and scored on the first of two doubles by Brandon Orsich.
Kephart chipped in two hits for the Chiefs.
Over the last five innings, Summers and Ogden limited DuBois to just two hits, but the damage had been done.
In Game Two, DuBois struck for its runs after a Clearfield double play.
McKee doubled and Sleigh singled for the first run. A single by Heckathorne and an error made it 2-0 before Jake Felix delivered a big hit for two RBIs.
Jones settled down and allowed only four more hits, but two errors gave DuBois three unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Zach Sloan and Devon Walker held the Chiefs to five singles, including two by Summers.
Zach Timchak and Curtis Collins had RBI hits off Sloan, the winner, in the fourth inning.
Walker notched a save, pitching one-hit ball and whiffing five in the final three innings.
Clearfield, which stranded 20 runners in the twinbill, will welcome Philipsburg to the BSC Monday for a 6 p.m. start.
