COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — The Clearfield American Legion baseball team’s best-pitched game of the season went for naught Friday afternoon as the Chiefs had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Bradford at Abner Doubleday Field.
The non-league game was halted after nine innings because of the two-hour time limit for teams playing at the historic diamond.
After surrendering a run on first-inning doubles by Aaron Fishkin and Hunter Dixon, Clearfield southpaw Thomas Summers blanked Bradford for the next six innings, allowing only three more hits. He walked five and hit one batter but struck out nine and picked off three runners at first base.
Ronny Ogden relieved and posted two more scoreless frames, striking out two and giving up one hit.
However, the Chiefs (0-6-1) had even more trouble breaking through against six Bradford hurlers, with their only two hits coming off Andrew Bacha in the fifth inning.
Spencer Herrington singled, advanced to second on Curtis Collins’ sacrifice bunt and scored on Kyler Kephart’s two-out hit.
Clearfield had plenty of scoring opportunities but was unable get another clutch hit.
The Chiefs, who received eight free passes, stranded 10 runners, all but two of them in scoring position.
