PHILIPSBURG — A return trip to the Gerry “Shorty” Davis Field at the Don Womer Baseball Complex proved very rewarding for the Clearfield Area High School team Thursday afternoon.
The Bison, who trailed 6-2 in the top of the fourth inning when the Mountain League game with Philipsburg-Osceola was suspended because of lightning and rain last Friday, took advantage of three walks and three errors to push across nine runs in the fifth inning and eventually triumph 12-10.
The outburst, which matched a big inning that highlighted the season-opening 18-7 win over Huntingdon at Juniata College on April 30, produced more runs than the Bison scored in 13 of their 18 games.
Logan Puit, Wyatt Westen and Spencer Herrington drove in teammates with singles, Jonas Kochan and Thomas Summers picked up RBIs with bases-loaded free passes, Jon Janocko and Cole Kephart had run-scoring groundouts and Janocko gained another RBI on a fielder’s choice play.
Summers singled for Clearfield’s fourth hit off Tanner Lamb in the rally.
Curtis Collins and Erik Sellers each had two hits and one RBI for the Bison, who finished 5-9 in the ML.
Janocko had pitched the three innings last week, allowing four hits and six runs, three earned. He struck out four and walked three.
Summers got the call when the game was resumed and earned his second victory with three strikeouts and one walk in four innings of work. He surrendered six hits and four runs, three earned.
Matt Carpin had key hits against both hurlers, a two-run single in the second frame and a two-run triple in the sixth.
Lamb and Nick Gray also had pairs of hits for the Mounties as well as sharing the mound duties.
The loss was charged to Lamb, who gave up 11 runs, with 10 of them unearned, in five innings.
P-O ended the season 3-10 in the ML and 4-15 overall.
The Bison (6-12) will host Punxsutawney Friday in their finale.
