Golden Tide Win Wild One in Brockway, 13-12

BROCKWAY – You really shouldn’t win a baseball game when your pitchers give up 13 walks and your defense commits seven errors.  You probably shouldn’t even have a chance to keep the game close either.

Don’t tell that to the Curwensville Golden Tide baseball squad as they came from behind in the top half of the seventh inning to edge Brockway Tuesday afternoon, 13-12, in spite of the walks and miscues in the field.

Ricky Magnuson of Curwensville pitched very well after relieving starter Kyle Johns in the bottom of the second frame to pick up his first win of the year.

Magnuson struck out seven Rovers, gave up just one hit and two unearned runs over the five and two-thirds innings of mound work.

The Rovers had a commanding 11-4 lead after just three innings but just couldn’t hold on, as the Tide got down to business over the last four innings.

Curwensville scored five in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the seventh to pull out the unlikely victory.

Tanner Elensky had four hits, including a double and a triple, scored three runs, stole three bases and drove in four runs.

Teammate and sophomore Travis Lansberry had two hits, a double and a home run while also driving in four.

Lansberry’s home run was an inside the park shot down the right field line in the top of the first inning with Elensky on base.

Brett Gardner and Jordan Russell also had big days at the plate for Curwensville with three hits each.  Russell had a double and scored four times.

Earlier this year the Rovers shut out the Tide, 3-0.

The Golden Tide, who have now won three of their last four games, were scheduled to leave Brockway and bus to Brookville for a night game on Tuesday, but rain postponed the contest.

The Curwensville-Brookville game has not been rescheduled at this time.

Curwensville, 6-12 on the season, perhaps will finish out the 2013 season on the road Wednesday at Ridgway, with a 3:00 pm start time.  The Tide beat the Elkers earlier in the year 6-1, at Curwensville.
