Goodman Hits for The Cycle as Lady Tide Pound Out 16-1 Win over Harmony

WESTOVER – The Curwensville Area High School softball team used the long-ball to upend Harmony 16-1 in Moshannon Valley League play on Monday.  The Lady Tide pounded out eight extra-base hits and piled up 18 total safeties in the game.

“We had a great day at the plate,” said Tide head coach Allen Leigey.  “The seniors set the pace, and we even had good results off  the bench.”

The five seniors at the top of the line-up accounted for 14 of the team’s hits.  Second-baseman Taylor Goodman turned in a 4-for-5 day which included hitting for the cycle.  Sarah Wriglesworth, Cheyenne Pentz (a double)  and Abby Johnson (a triple) slapped out three hits each with Tiffany Carter adding a double of her own.  Sophomore Alaina Stiles collected a triple among her two hits while junior Kealy Wassil came off the bench to add two knocks with a double.

The visitors came to the plate five times in the game and scored runs in each inning.  Goodman’s home run and Stiles’ triple highlighted a four-run first inning as the Lady Tide wasted no time taking control of the contest.   Goodman and Pentz doubled to set the score at 5-0 in the second frame.

Triples from Goodman and Johnson wrapped around Carter’s two-bagger were the key slaps in a five-run third, and Wassil’s double started off a pair of runs in the fourth for a 13-0 score after four innings.

Three singles and the help of two free passes added three runs in the fifth to set up the 15-run rule after the Lady Owls were given their bats in the bottom of the frame.  Harmony put together back-to-back singles that brought home their lone run before the game was halted.

Tide pitcher Tierra Shope scattered five hits in the game while walking two and striking out three.  Hayley Hull hit safely twice including a double to lead the Owl bats.

The win put Curwensville (13-4) one game away from capturing the Moshannon Valley League Championship.  The title will be decided on Wednesday when Curwensville hosts Moshannon Valley.  A win gives the Black and Gold the MVL crown; a loss would have them sharing the top spot with West Branch.

However, before the game with the Damsels, the Lady Tide must battle with Ridgway Tuesday afternoon at Riverside Stadium.  A final scheduling note has Curwensville hosting Brockway on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in a game postponed from last week.
