Brookville Stops the Golden Tide 11-2

CURWENSVILLE – Breaking open a 2-2 tie with nine runs over the last three innings the Brookville Raiders picked up their fifth win of the season Thursday afternoon in Curwensville, defeating the Golden Tide 11-2.

Senior Nathan Bonfardine went the distance on the mound for Brookville to pick up the victory.  Bonfardine scattered six hits, all singles, while striking out ten Tide hitters.

The Raiders carried a 2-0 margin into the bottom of the fourth before the Golden Tide picked up two runs to knot the score at 2-2.  It would be the only time on the afternoon that Curwensville runners would cross home plate.

Jake Stiles and Jason Bloom had back to back singles to lead off the fourth frame for Curwensville, with Stiles scoring on an error and Noah Strickland, pinch running for Bloom (Jason), racing home on a infield single by senior Jordan Russell.

Brookville took control of the game starting in the fifth inning with two runs and added three more in the sixth and a big four spot in the top half of the seventh inning.

Russell paced the Tide with two hits and one RBI

Jarren Ross and Cameron Yard had three hits for the Raiders while Bonfardine had two, both doubles.

Ross also had a game high three RBI’s, as Brookville improved to 5-11 on the 2013 campaign.

Tide head coach Denny Johns said after the game “It seemed like they wanted it a little more than we did for whatever reason.  We did have our chances with leaving 10 base runners on, but just couldn’t seem to find a way to get them in.”

Finding a positive was tough in the 11-2 loss, but Johns commented, “Jordan’s (Russell) two out single in the fourth inning got us even with Brookville at that time, which was big for us.  And it was nice to see Jordan come through.”

Then Johns closed with, “I also thought that Kyle (Johns) threw well for us in the five innings he was out there, but the base on balls, once again, didn’t help us.”

The Golden Tide walked eight Raiders, a problem that has plagued Curwensville hurlers for most of the season.

The Tide (4-12) return to the diamond against Harmony in its final regular season home game on Monday starting at 4:15 pm.  The contest is also a Moshannon Valley League game (MVL), with Curwensville having a 2-1 record in league action.

NOTE: On Tuesday Curwensville will play a doubleheader with a game at Brockway against the Rovers starting at 3:30 pm.  Brockway defeated the Tide earlier this season, in Curwensville, 3-0.

After the contest with the Rovers, the Golden Tide will get back on the bus and journey to Brookville to once again play the Raiders in a game set to start at 7:15 pm at McKinley Field in Brookville.
