Bison Pull Out Extra-Inning Win With Two Runs in Ninth

SPRING MILLS — Singles by Jon Janocko and Josh Sorbera bracketed three walks as the Clearfield Area High School baseball team pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Penns Valley 6-4 Tuesday afternoon.

After Janocko singled and Cole Kephart drew a free pass from Ram starter Cody Luse, Adam DeGarmo relieved and immediately walked Erik Sellers and Wyatt Westen to force in the winning run. One out later, Kephart scored the insurance run on Sorbera’s hit.

Westen registered his second win with two innings of shutout relief work. He struck out four and allowed only one hit.

Penns Valley (8-9) had prolonged the Mountain League game with three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off Thomas Summers, who limited the hosts to one run though yielding eight hits through the first six frames.

The sophomore left-hander retired 11 batters in a row after picking off Taylor Collison at second base in the first inning.

Double plays plays ended Penns Valley threats in the fifth and sixth innings, but two Clearfield (5-10) errors opened the door in the seventh. The Rams then wiped out the Bison’s 4-1 lead on bases-loaded walks to Luse and Wyatt Sharp and a single by Kevin Butts.

The first four Bison runs were unearned, too.

In the third innng, Westen and Josh Kennedy were aboard via a single and walk, respectively, when a two-out misplay on Curtis Collins’ grounder enabled them to score.  Collins tallied the third run on a wild pitch.

Collins reached on an error and Kephart doubled for a run in the sixth.

Summers had two of Clearfield’s six hits.

The Bison will host Central in a make-up game Wednesday.

C.J. Gathagan pitched a two-hit shutout for the Clearfield junior varsity in a 5-0 win.

Zach Krise and Logan Puit had two hits apiece and Noah Cline tripled for the Bison. Krise also scored three runs.
